I established Copiapoa.com after finding that reliable, integrated information about Copiapoa was surprisingly difficult to access. Scientific research, historical publications, field observations, and cultivation knowledge often exist in isolation, while much practical experience remains anecdotal, difficult to verify, or shared privately among experienced growers. Rather than adding another set of opinions, my goal is to examine the available evidence, acknowledge where uncertainty remains, and explain the reasoning behind the conclusions presented here.
What began as an interest in building a small collection soon became a much broader exploration of the Atacama Desert. At first, I was captivated by the stark beauty of Copiapoa. But as I learned more about the desert, my appreciation shifted from what I could see to what I could not. Their remarkable forms became a visible record of a cool, hyper-arid landscape sustained by fog, and of millions of years of adaptation to one of Earth's most extraordinary environments.
Over the past several years, that curiosity has taken me through scientific literature, habitat ecology, historical collector records, field observations, and long-term cultivation. Copiapoa.com is the result: an effort to bring those strands together into a single, evidence-based resource that explains not only how to grow Copiapoa, but why they evolved as they did.
My goal is to make reliable, well-supported information accessible to everyone, from those encountering Copiapoa for the first time to experienced growers, researchers, and conservationists.
Philosophy
My approach is rooted in science, careful observation, and respect for the plants' natural environment. Rather than focusing solely on producing attractive plants, I seek to understand why different populations evolved as they did and to reflect those conditions as faithfully as possible in cultivation.
This perspective combines current scientific research with modern horticultural practice and the accumulated knowledge of experienced growers. Many parts of this site have been strengthened through discussions with collectors, field researchers, botanists, and cultivators whose insights have refined both the material presented here and my own understanding of the genus.
I view these plants not as possessions, but as living records of the landscapes that shaped them. Many Copiapoa can live for more than a century and will outlast their growers. Preserving them also means preserving their provenance, history, and the knowledge attached to them.

Rather than treating cultivation, taxonomy, ecology, and conservation as separate subjects, the site brings them together within a single framework grounded in habitat. Morphology, provenance, historical records, and original analysis are presented within that broader ecological context. The goal is to explain why Copiapoa grow, vary, and appear as they do.
An equally important objective is preserving locality data and historical provenance, particularly as older collections are dispersed and field knowledge is gradually lost.
The plants maintained through this project continue to refine the work presented here. Long-term cultivation, careful observation, and comparison with documented habitat material often raise new questions, challenge assumptions, and improve both the site's content and my own understanding of the genus
